{:ga}Tá stiúrthóir ealaíne nua fostaithe ag Fíbín, an t-aon chomhlacht drámaíochta Gaeilge a théann ar camchuairt atá fágtha sa tír. Tá an-áthas orainn a fhógairt go bhfuil Philip Doherty, fear de bhunaidh bhaile an Chabháin le taithí na mblianta i gcúrsaí drámaíochta tagtha ar bord chun Fíbín a stiúraigh i bhforbairt drámaí Gaeilge agus iad a thabhairt ar camchuairt, ní hamháin anseo in Éirinn ach go hidirnáisiúnta chomh maith.

Dúirt Philip Doherty agus é ag socrú isteach ina ról nua, “Bím buíoch i gcónaí as an bpost atá agam, ag cruthú drámaí. Anois agus mé ag tabhairt faoi shaothair nua a chumadh do chomhlacht mar Fíbín i mo ról nua, is onóir mhór dhom é. Bhí meas agam i gcónaí ar stíl fhísiúil mhisniúil amharclannaíochta Fíbín, an ceiliúradh a dhéanann siad ar an nGaeilge agus fís an chomhlachta i gcroílár Chonamara aoibhinn álainn. Tá mé ag súil go mór le scéalta nua a insint chun ceangal a dhéanamh le lucht féachana nua agus seónna nua a chruthú”.

Scríbhneoir agus stiúrthóir aitheanta é Philip agus aithne forleathan air i gcúrsaí drámaíochta. Scríobh Philip leagan nua don scéal eipiciúil Fiannaíochta Tóraíocht Dhiarmada agus Ghráinne a stiúraigh Mikel Murfi do Fíbín don chéad uair i 2016. Bhunaigh Philip a chomhlacht drámaíochta féin Gonzo Theatre i mbaile an Chabháin, ionad nua do dhaoine le suim i gceol, drámaí grinn agus amharclannaíocht ailtéarnach. I measc na ndrámaí eile a scríobh/a stiúir sé tá The Experience Room (Buaiteoir Ghradam Scripts Ireland 2017), The Circus of Perseverance (Féile Imill Bhaile Átha Cliath 2012 & ainmniúchán do Ghradam Stewart Parker), The Birthday Man (Féile Imill Bhaile Átha Cliath 2013), The Great Couch Rebellion (Theatre Upstairs) agus sraith drámaí aonghnímh dár teideal The Town on Stage. Tá Gradam RTÉ PJ O’Connor buaite faoi dhó aige lena dhrámaí raidió, Mysterious Ways i 2006 agus A Golden Triangle i 2013. Is déantóir scannán é Philip chomh maith a bhfuil iliomad gradaim bainte amach aige. Bhuaigh sé RTÉ Storyland i 2012 leis an dráma The Begrudgers agus bhí sé ar an BBC Talent Hot List i 2017. Bhí sé ar dhuine de bhunaitheoirí/stiúrthóir cruthaitheach ar an Spás Ealaíne i Halla Bhaile an Chabháin chomh maith, chun roinnt dá chuid gaiscí a lua.

Dúirt Darach Ó Tuairisg, Stiúrthóir Bainistíochta Fíbín “Tá ríméad orm go raibh muid in ann duine leis na cáilíochtaí agus an stíl fhísiúil atá ag Philip a mhealladh chuig Fíbín. Tús le ré nua do Fíbín agus do dhrámaíocht na Gaeilge é seo. Chomh maith le bheith ina scríbhneoir agus ina stiúrthóir d’ardchaighdeán, tá cuir amach ar leith aige a bheith ag obair leis an bpobal áitiúil agus tá stíl an-fhísiúil aige freisin a thagann le misean Fíbín chun drámaíocht d’ardchaighdeán a chur ar fáil do dhaoine óga. Tá mé ag súil go mór le hobair leis sna blianta beaga atá amach romhainn”.

Stiúraigh Philip seó sráide le Fíbín mar chuid d’imeachtaí Lóchrann Chonamara, togra de chuid Gaillimh 2020 ar an Teach Dóite le gairid agus tá sé chun mórléiriú na bliana seo Cath na Ceathrún Rua a scríobh agus a stiúradh d’oscailt oifigiúil oifigí Fíbín anseo i gConamara i mí Lúnasa. Beidh aisteoirí pobail fuinniúla amaitéaracha páirteach ann i dteannta aisteoirí gairmiúla agus teicnící nua. Cuirfidh Fíbín críoch leis an mbliain le clár leathan go maith, lena n-áirítear seónna nua mar Cóisir Tí agus Mac an Bheatha chomh maith le An Triail a thabhairt amach ar camchuairt don tríú bliain déag as a chéile.  {:}{:en}Fíbín are proud to announce the appointment of Philip Doherty as Artistic Director, the only Irish language touring drama company left on the island. Philip hails from Co. Cavan and brings with him an abundance of experience in theatre to develop a fresh approach of making theatre in the Irish language to tour nationally and internationally from our base here in Connemara.

Philip comments as he settles into his new role, “To be making theatre as my job is a privilege I am always thankful for. To be making work for a company like Fíbín, as their new artistic director, will be an absolute honour. I have always admired Fíbín’s bold, visual style of theatre, their celebration of the Irish language, and their company’s vision in the heart of beautiful Connemara. I look forward to telling new stories to connect with new audiences, and creating the spectacle of life”.

Philip is a renowned writer and director and is well know in the theatre industry. Philip wrote a new version of the epic Fenian tale The Pursuit of Diarmaid and Gráinne for Fíbín, directed by Mikel Murfi for the first time in 2016. In 2009 Philip started his own theatre, The Gonzo Theatre, which was a new venue in Ireland for alternative acts in music, comedy and theatre. Other writer/ director credits include, The Experience Room (Winner of Scripts Ireland Award 2017), The Circus of Perseverance (Dublin Fringe 2012 & a Stewart Parker Trust Award nomination), The Birthday Man (Dublin Fringe 2013), The Great Couch Rebellion (Theatre Upstairs), and a series of one-act plays entitled The Town on Stage. Darach Ó Tuairisg, Managing Director of Fíbín said “I am absolutely thrilled that someone with Philip’s qualifications and visual style has come on board. This is the start of a new era for Fíbín and for Irish language theatre. As well as being an exceptional writer and director, he has experience working with local communities and he has a very visual style which adds to Fíbín’s mission of producing high quality Irish language theatre for young people. I am really looking forward to working with him over the next few years”.

Philip recently directed Fíbín’s spectacle at the bonfire for Lóchrann Chonamara at Maam Cross on St John’s Eve, a Galway 2020 Small Towns, Big Ideas initiative. This will be an outdoor spectacle as part of the official opening of the Fíbín offices here in Connemara in August. Local amateur actors with passion and energy will take part in the show alongside some well known professional actors and new techniques will be tested. Fíbín finishes the year with an extensive programme, ranging from new productions Cóisir Tí (House Party) and Mac an Bheatha (Macbeth) as well as a nationwide tour of An Triail for the 13th year in a row.
